Lucifer At Work
Sometimes you find one of those bands that you just can’t put your finger on. They’ve got so many different and interesting things going on at once that it’s hard to wrap your head around what you’re hearing. Well, today I found one of those bands: Lucifer At Work.
This band takes hard rock and heavy metal, and combines it with some amazing violin work. I think that’s what makes the band. The violinist, “Charlie Virgin,” plays the melody at times, but also plays some great counter melodies, thus adding another layer to the music. The vocalist, “The Mercurial Roy Orbs” (@royorbs3 on Twitter), is a talented singer, his haunting voice flows evenly throughout the songs, again, often punctuated by the violin’s counter melody. Both Roy Orbs and “The Boy” play guitar. They both seem quite versatile, playing calm, cleaned up passages, and then laying on the crunch at a moment’s notice. Bassist “Johnny ola Johnny Johnson P. Warrel Tanzerini” does a spectacular job, playing very tastefully, never over-doing it, playing what fits for each song.
And that brings us to drums. “Glorry Hole Knopfler” (@chazdrums) is one of the more dynamic drummers I have heard in a while. He knows how to play loud and hard when it’s called for, and he also knows how to lay back quiet well, too (see “Stream of Consciousness Rock” below). He changes tempos and rhythms on a dime, and manages to make it seem effortless. He makes more complex passages sound effortless.
I’ve been listening to LAW for about an hour now, and I keep finding new layers in their music. This is a band that I really am looking forward to hearning more from in the coming years. Tell me what you think.
Thanks to @alex for reminding me about Lucifer At Work.
